JC "TALKS" on the phone

As of Saturday Night.
Cal "talked" with John tonight. John conveyed to Karen he wanted to call me. I told him that I loved him and if he repeated that I'd have to kill him. Via Karen he waved bye bye.
Neil also visited Saturday night. He knows JC is very concerned about the direct and fallout costs of this illness and the effect on his family. This makes what we do and achieve at Team Chappy, especially on the Dec. 11th fundraiser, all the more important. JC has a lot of us working on those issues and concerns right now. I pray there might be some light at the end of the tunnel there as well.
We are preparing a CD to play for John with some of his show, some classic spots he did with Neil, and some personal messages from many of us in Seaside. I'd like to assemble Team Chappy to record this after our Monday Fundraiser meeting.
Cal suggested if John is unable to talk, one way to show him what's been going on for the last 5 weeks or so is to hand him a laptop and let him look at the BLOG, it is after all a quasi-documentary of what happened to JC. Neil and Karen are considering this.
JC is still in the ICU, on a small portable respirator that he is controlling with his own breathing, not the other way around. The ICU is still a lousy place for visitors but Neil feels JC will be going into a regular hospital room soon. Will keep Blog readers advised.
I think it accurate to say the nurses and doctors are astounded at JC's progress with this nasty bit of business. Will he be home in time for Christmas ? Don't know the answer to that. He WILL be alive and on the way to recovery and that's a long way from where this was headed weeks ago.

Black Friday? Not for us!

They have changed John’s ventilator to a smaller one and have reduced the pressure to zero and he currently has NO O2 assist. His blood oxygen level is 97%. All this is good news to the point that the doctors are talking about moving him out of the ICU. He still has a chest tube in and can’t talk, but is aware of his surroundings.
This is the best news that we've had in over four weeks.

We at Team Chappy know that many of you would like to go visit him, but he is still in the ICU. We will let everyone know just as soon as the doctors and Karen say that John is strong enough to receive visitors. We at Team Chappy also want to go visit, but we have to wait along with you. So, please hang in there with us.

Who needs turkey for a great Thanksgiving

There are plans over the next couple of days to remove John's chest tube , from the deflated lung issue. He is awake much of the time, no longer in medically induced coma..
He is in considerable pain and on a pain killer many times stronger than Morphine. He can see and recognise his surroundings. He can communicate with hand and eye gestures.

If his peep stays at 5 or less (it's been as low and 4) and his O2 assist stays below 40 ( it has been raised periodically above this), he may also soon be on room O2 and the trac tube and ventilator gone as well. Doctors are waiting and hoping for John's kidney functions to return as well.

In the mean time, he's in an ICU. While every one's sentiments and the new developments are very encouraging, the ICU is not a good place to receive well-wishers. That, unless we at Team Chappy hear otherwise from the family, should wait till John is moved to a regular hospital room and/or discharged. John has been battling a life threatening illness and in a deep sleep for over 3 weeks to awaken to some frightening circumstances. Please, time is one of the biggest healers here..Let's give John and his family all the time they need. At Team Chappy, we are of the optimistic opinion that as Thanksgiving arrives, John may well be on the mend. Right now that beats a turkey dinner any day.

Monday, November 23, 2009

Big step forward!

John's peep (ventalator presure) is now at 5 and the oxygen assist level is 40%. Under normal situations this would mean that he would be taken off the ventalator. However, with the ARDS, they are keeping him on it just a little longer. He is completely offf the heavy sedation but he is on pain killers. The sedation medicine that he was on was DIPRIVAN which is the same medicine that Michael Jackson was using. Things are moving in the right direction.

Slowly waking up.

John is slowly being taken off the heavy medically induced coma.
Hopefully, soon, he'll be awake and able to respond and converse.
He has come out of the the medically induced coma from time time to time recently, to interact with us. Hang in there and pray for a short recovery period.

Tiny Steps

John's right lung collapsed on Monday, but they were able to put a tube in to re inflate it and get him stabilized.

In the last couple of days, he has made some tiny steps for the good...but this is going to be a slow process.

As any of us would tend to do when someone we love is in John's condition, Karen's natural, loving response is to want to hold John's hand. But the doctors had asked her not to do this today as it takes...I guess you would say "John's spirit" and his attention away from his core and trying to heal that area and pulls it towards his hand and Karen. How helpless she must feel and yet she is a trooper and seems to be holding up very well considering all she is trying to do to keep things as normal as possible for the kids. John really picked a good one, eh?

Monday, November 16, 2009

Maybe 2 steps forward this time.

Yesterday, John got a tracheotmy, the ventilator is no longer down his mouth so the doctors can begin taking him out of the medically induced coma, this can take 6-8 days (for him to completely be free of the effects of the heavy sedation). They hope that several of his organ functions will start returning once the sedation wears off. John at times seems aware of his surrroundings. He kissed his wife.

To everyone that loves John,

To everyone that loves John,
We started this blog to help everyone keep up to date with changes in John’s condition. We (Neil, Cal, Robin, and Deb) have tried to responsibly give these updates while protecting the children from the real possibility that John could succumb to his illness. This blog has kind of a life of its own, and if we don’t feed it with information daily then it seems to spawn rumors, bad and good, regarding John’s condition.
Saturday night was no exception. I received a call from Nancy McKeown, with a panicked voice she told me she had heard terrible news from a customer about John’s condition. I had talked to Karen Chapman not 2 hours prior and she had told me that she would call with any changes and that John was pretty stable. I thought, how could anyone know anything before me, but I got right on the phone with Karen to confirm that he was still battling. Talk about stressful.
Then I talk to a lot of people that think that John is going to walk through the door at any minute with his smile and, of course, something he thinks is witty to say. Let me tell you folks, John is seriously ill if and when he gets out of the hospital he will have an extremely difficult recovery. It may take months, even years for him to regain his strength and his abilities. This illness is scary!
Well, I (Neil) am here to tell you whole truth and nothing but the truth.
The H1N1 or Swine flu virus caused John to have a complete respiratory collapse which in turn caused other serious organ shutdowns and worries. As we have talked about previously, this syndrome is called ACRS (http://www.ards.org/learnaboutards/whatisards/brochure/) and this is what John is fighting for his life against at this point. Feel free to click on this link to read the brochure that explains the syndrome, the treatments, and recovery aspects.
John has been on the respirator now for three weeks, this is what has been keeping him alive. His lungs can recover, but remain with signs of cloudiness due to liquid and swelling of the pneumonia.
The problem with the respirator is that the peep (the pressure that keeps the lungs inflated) can also cause damage and scarring to the lungs. We have updated the blog in the past showing that this number, the peep, has been decreased from 19 to 10, which is good, however, the percentage of oxygen being used to maintain the level of oxygen saturation in his blood has been increased and decreased on a daily and sometimes hourly basis. The nurses and doctors try to keep the 02 saturation in John’s blood well in the 90’s and this is many times easier said than done.
John’s kidney’s shut down early on and he has been on dialysis almost continually since he was admitted. The kidney’s can recover and until John is further into his recovery the doctors don’t act like this is a big worry. At least this is probably the least of their worries with John at this time.
The latest worry that the doctors have is John’s inability to assimilate foods. They have tried with no success to feed John through a stomach tube. The worry with this is that maybe his stomach, or gut as the doctor says, has shut down like his kidneys leading to still more problems.
So, as of today, Sunday Nov. 15, John is still in dire circumstances. The course of action that has been on the drawing board for the last couple of days is to stabilize John enough to give him a tracheaoscopy in which they will place the breathing tube in his trachea rather than down his throat. Karen believes that he is stable enough and barring any drastic changes the tracheaoscopy will be done today. When they are able to complete this they will be able to remove him from the sedation that he has been on for the last three weeks. Once removed from sedation the doctors hope he may regain some of the function in his gut and kidneys.
Once again, I want to express that John is in very serious condition. He is not “out of the woods” by any stretch of the imagination. We need to give John all of our prayers and keep giving him prayers. He is not giving up, so let us not give up!
Please, please don’t believe or pass on any rumors that you may hear. We will do a better job of keeping everyone updated on this blog. I really believe that now John needs us all to be positive and say our prayers and believe in him. This is crunch time! Thanks

No Change today

A quiet day today with no change reported. Let pray for a good day tomorrow.

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Two steps forward, one step backwards

Today seems to be one of those backward steps. John had a couple of really good days and today is one of those small steps backwards. Let’s keep the prayers coming for a better day tomorrow.

John is stable...

As of Wednesday morning, John's condition is stable. The pressure on his ventilator is at 10. When they get it down to 5, then he's off that machine. The doctors have said that he currently has ARDS. Getting off the ventilator will help in his recovery.

On a positive note, the doctors have brought John out of his medically induced coma a couple of times. During the times he’s been “awake” he’s been able to answer questions with a thumbs up or down, and has been aware of his surroundings including knowing that his wife Karen is in the room.

Please keep your prayers for John and his family coming.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU!!!!!

Thanks to all the caring hearts, willing hands and open wallets & check books of The Chapman's community family- last Fri.'s Spaghetti Feed raised over $8,000 for the Chapman Family Donations Fund at Sterling Savings.

I can not count the number of times I heard and read, "anything you need" and "how an I help" last week as we prepared for the event.

The list of who worked and gave is very, very long... as long as the line was for food at times: we severed over 550 people and more than 50 volunteered! Again a big "THANK YOU" to everyone!! The "Get Well" banner has been delivered...

A dinner/auction is being planned for Dec. 11th at the Seaside Civic & Convention Center; times, menu, tickets and more details TBA. If you would like to volunteer or have items for either the live or silent auction please email me (kaimscircus@charter.net) with the following info:

Here's a Chappy Medical update

We've gone through three days where not only did John's condition not get worse but to where we've seen some movement in the right direction. John's eyes are open some times, he seems to have some situational awareness even though he remains on a heavy sedative(; i.e.: appearing very concerned if he coughs ( we'd all probably feel that way if we had a ventilator on us and started to cough). The pressure on John's ventilator was 16 yesterday and down to 12 today, at 5 , he's off the ventilator and that would make the rest of his recovery so much easier. John's wife, Karen, is encouraged today.

Please keep the prayers coming. I know it's working. And thanks for your support at the Spaghetti feed on Friday.

An open letter to the Rugby community

Chappy needs your help!!!

Many of you know of John Chapman's serious battle with the H1N1, swine flu virus. Tomorrow will mark 1 week that he has been in intensive care with a ventilator down his throat and in an induced coma.
It is time for the Rugby community to step up and help one of our own
John and his family are now and will continue in the future to face a serious financial burden related to this disease.
There is a fund set up and the local Seaside Sterling bank for John. It is not at any of the other Sterling banks.
YOU, can contribute to this fund by sending a check made out to the John Chapman family to his radio station. The address is:
P.O. Box 354
Seaside, OR 97138
I am sending a check for $100 today and I challenge every coach, referee, rugby administrator, and rugby player to match or exceed my donation. If you can not match it then I can guarantee you that any amount will be appreciated.
There but by the Grace of God go you or me. Lets show John and his family how much we care and how much he is appreciated.

Mark Webber

2 steps forward, 1 step back

John is pretty much holding his own at this point. Yesterday John was taken off of dialysis but by the end of the night he was back on it. He is still in ICU and not out of the woods yet. But with everyday gone by, we are ever hopeful. The research Cal has done seems to tell us that the 2 week/ 14th day of hospitalization marker is a crtical point in a patient's battle against this nasty H1N1 bug.
John is now approaching that point. A few extra prayers would be appreciated. We know those ARE working.

Spaghetti Feed Help

Greetings team and friends of Chappy!

Jason Boyd has asked that I be the point person or “chair” for the Spaghetti Feed Fundraiser being held at Broadway Middle School from 5-7pm before the Clatsop Clash!

We’ve received many offers of help and I’m waiting to hear back from a few organizations with their names and numbers of volunteers. Please feel free to send me an email at kaimscircus@charter.net or call my cell at 503.739.0824 if you’d like to help. When all the volunteer spots are filled, I will continue to keep names on a list as a second event (in the next few months) is a possibly.

At this time we are in need of Styrofoam plates, forks, napkins, beverages (maybe cups too) and dessert. Cooks are preparing for 400.

Big “Thank you” to all those who have already called… this is an amazing and generous community!

Laura Kaim

John's new bed

John seems to be progressing along nicely. The hospital has moved John from the "special" hospital bed to a regular hospital bed. This is because he's able to breath on his back. Also, the doctor's have started to slowly bring him out of the deep sedation that they've had him in. His eyes have now started to "flutter" a little. This is good. He still doesn't recognize Karen or anyone, but isn't in such a deep sleep. Another good sign is that John is starting to cough.

Something that might have helped in John's treatment is that there's another patient with virtually the same thing as John, but has been in the hospital about a week longer. With having another patient to guide them, the doctors are able to treat John better and to know how he should be responding to the medicine. We look at these changes as positive steps in the right direction.

Note from Cal Brady

Received an email from Paul Mitchel at New Northwest Broadcasters saying he'd heard about John and wants to help in any way he could. As John and Cal have had a, to say the least, vigorous on-going competition for ad dollars with NNB, this is especially touching and heartfelt for me. Just another reminder of what a great community we live in here when we all pull together.

Do you have an idea to help the Chapman family??

This Friday Nov.6, CHAPPYS TEAM will be having a brainstorming meeting to come up with ideas to help out the Chapman family. If you have an idea and would like to let us know about it, come to the meeting this Friday. It will be at 12 noon to 1pm at the Sunset Empire Park & Rec. Youth Center on Broadway. If you can't make the meeting, we still want to hear your ideas, so please send them to anyone on Chappys Team.

John continues to improve

As of Monday evening John continues to spend more time on his back which represents an improvement in his breathing ability and also takes us closer to John leaving his 1/2 million dollar bed.

***Chappie – You are now officially a member of the P.D.O.G.s (Pedantic, Degenerate Old Guys) . If your butt is in that bed too long you are liable to get hemorrhoids and thus not eligible to wear white shorts. So get your ass out of there!

Cheers

***Dear John
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. We know you will get out of that --------- bed and get back to giving us all a hard time.
We miss that a lot. Your family is the best . We will be going to the Clatsop Clash in your Honor. So Seaside had better win!!!!!!!

***Bro,
Don’t listen to Tobin..., he already has all my pain-killers - you know – the ones you put in the other end...
Remember, if you don’t wanna get up, and the morning nurse holds a flame to your feet – this is an quick and semi-painless way to get rid of that nagging athlete’s foot! Don’t miss out on these opportunities pal...
As for weight-loss, I’m excited for you – and remember – there’s always room for jello (or tapioca)
Yer pal,
CB

***John,

Hopefully when you read this you are well on your way to getting out and coming home. Everyone at the PD is thinking about you and sending good positive thoughts. I think some of them even miss hearing your morning show, but they won’t admit it. My daughter Anne (you met her and her kids at the Beach Run) also wanted you to know they are thing about you as well.

We are all pulling for you so keep up the good fight and we will see you soon.

***Hey Chappy!
This is Grey and Tamara in Portland, and we're so sorry to hear about your situation.
I've just read through all the updates, and your progress is really encouraging. It is not surprising to me at all that you have so many people in your life who wish you well and want to help you get better.
We are supporting you in our thoughts and seeing you all better.
Love,

***Hi John

On my office wall there's a picture of the referees (all blind) at the GG
Tournament circa 1994. Wishing you a steady, and complete return to health,
so that you appear in many more such photos. Our thoughts are truly with
you.

Ed

***John,

Looking forward to seeing you get through this. When you do, you got to stop living such a clean upstanding life and start having fun to the extreme. Maybe play a few games as well as refereeing. Regardless, get yourself well. We need you out there to keep the rest of us in line.

Cheers,
troll

We are going to check in often to get good progress updates. We miss hearing you on the radio!

***John, Karen and family....

I have been saying prayers and sending lots of positive healing energy since I got the phone call about you...I don't have the ability to do "Elvis" or tell your corny jokes and make anyone laugh as you did during my own health issues but I can pray and I have been doing just that.

You are all in my thoughts...Karen I watched Jimmy through my own stuff and I know how hard it is on the caregiver...especially when you love someone something fierce. You may be the quiet side to John but I know you are his biggest supporter in all he does and what makes him give so much of himself to others. Be sure to take care of you Karen, I know John is being taken care of but it is a really difficult place to be on the other side of the bed so to speak sitting and waiting hour after hour. Know that you are also in my prayers and thoughts.

My heart goes out to you all...I do know that you are a very passionate family with a lot of love and giving spirit, may some of that come back to you now as John gets stronger each day on his way to healing completely and back to his crazy self.

God's blessing to you all, always in all ways.

Love from the O'Briens
Piper and clan

***Hi John and Karen and the entire Chapman Family,
We are so sorry to hear of John's illness, and we have everyone we know praying for his recovery!
John, don't push it, you know it takes so much longer to recover when we are old!!! LOL!
We are happy to help out with anything you might need, be it, food, prayers, fund raising, or printing. We are happy to donate any printing jobs that may be required. Just give us a call and let us know.
Jared and Chantal send their thoughts and prayers too! They said next time they are in town, they will drop by and see you.
Please call with anything we can help out with.
God bless and Keep you. I'm saying a special Novena to St. Jude.
Love,
Roy and Sheila Bennett

***Ali and I (wedgy) just want you to recover completly. I'll bet you have nurse that wakes you up in the middle of the night, I wouldn't be supprised if her first name wasn't Clarice. Hope to see you soon.
Ali and Wedgy Winchester

***Hey Chappy, thinking of you and hoping you are back to your old self in no time. Matt Burke, Bend Rugby Women and Girls.

I've known John well since 1990 when we played together for ORSU. Please convey my best wishes to John and his family for his full and speedy recovery. I live in Portland. If there's anything I can do for him or the family, please let me know.

We'll continue to think good thoughts.

All the best,

***John, We have been in continual prayer for you and your family as you go through this life situation. Our church, North Coast Family Fellowship, has also been uplifting you and yours in prayer daily. We trust the Lords hand is upon you. That the Dr.'s will have super natural wisdom. That you will gain your strength, and health back miraculously. We also trust that your faith in Christ and his hand upon your life will be strengthened, as he brings you through this. Take special care. Our warmest regards, Rick and Tracielynn Raterman

Thoughts from friend and colleague - Cal Brady

I think what everyone is working on here is twofold:

(1).John has to get weaned off the ventilator, awake, weaned off the dialysis, weaned off the pain killers and he has to get literally on his feet again.Every day takes us closer and not further from those goals. As Karen said the prayers are working. So please keep them coming. And, that's from a Unitarian who is thinking of converting when this is over.
(2). We all have to pull together to help John's family get figuratively back on their feet. We at the Chappy Team are getting many generous offers of support and ideas in this regard. We are not ignoring your kind intentions, keep those coming too. Please give us time to sort this out and do the best things for John's family as well.

Thanks

More helpers

*** Had a call from a Ron Myers. He’s with the referee society. He lives in Lake Oswego. And he works in the hospital system. Has an office there.I just talked with him and he said to have Karen call him 24/7 if she needs anything. It’s good to have someone in the hospital system that can help.

***Please let us know how we can help with fundraisers. Scott and I will do any grunt work you can think of. We would be happy to help plan, or just sweep floors. Can you put fundraiser contact info on the blog? Scott and Shannon Symonds

***Albert and Alice Wood have a small condo unit located near Hall Blvd and Scholl's Ferry Road in Tigard. It is a few minutes from St. Vincent Hospital. Hope this can help the Chapmans. Alice

***Patti Atkins, PR director of Seaside Providence Hospital, wants to offer any help she can. PATTI ATKINS – 717-7505 patti.atkins@providence.org

***Sterling Saving Bank has set up a fund – CHAPMAN FAMILY FUND.

***I spoke with Cathie Cates at the Natural Nook. She has taken several orders for flowers for John. She knows they can’t be delivered to the hospital, so she is “holding” the orders. We discussed creative ways to collect funds, put most of the money in the CHAPMAN FAMILY FUND and then send ONE magnificent bouquet from all who donated when John is able to receive flowers. Cathie is fine with doing that…and wants the money to go to the family…so no worries there. She and I will work out the details and let you know tomorrow or early next week. Deb

***Rotary Club of Seaside will make an announcement at the end of our auction, about the blog and the CHAPMAN FAMILY FUND.

John holding his own.

There wasn't much change in John's condition today...but there is a bit of positive news. John spent 24 hours laying on his back. Weaning from the "special suspention bed" is good news!
